Meter and equipment ownership

As your electricity supplier, NB Power installs and maintains key electrical equipment needed to service your home or business, including a meter, poles, and service wires. Homeowners and commercial property owners are responsible for installing and maintaining several parts of the equipment surrounding the meter.

NB Power regularly maintains and inspects electricity meters to ensure accuracy and compliance with Measurement Canada regulations and the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act.

Over time, meters and surrounding equipment can fail or require inspections, which could prompt NB Power to do a site visit. If repairs are required on any equipment not owned by NB Power, it is the customer’s responsibility to have the repairs completed by a certified electrician before NB Power can continue the work. If work requiring the meter to be disconnected is needed, please call us at 1 800 663-6272 and contact a certified electrician.

It is important to know which parts are the customer's responsibility versus NB Power’s.
