Are you Prepared?

Preparing for an Emergency

Be sure that adults and children know how to turn off the water and electricity in your home. Have an evacuation plan for emergencies.

NB Power prepares for emergencies by exercising emergency plans, conducting preventative maintenance to equipment and trees, and through various other drills to ensure employees and partners are prepared to respond.

We encourage you to be prepared for extreme weatherpower outages and other emergencies that may occur.

In an emergency, people may have to evacuate their homes.

  • Develop an emergency plan and be sure that your family knows what to expect and what to do.
  • Include what to do in the event of an extended power outage.
  • Label the main electrical power switch and know how to shut it off safely in case you have to evacuate.
  • Prepare an emergency kit and store it in an easy, safe location. Check it regularly to make it is well stocked and that all equipment is in good working order.
  • Check the Public Safety Canada website for tips.

What to do during an evacuation

If you are under an evacuation order:

  • Turn off all unnecessary appliances, such as air conditioners and hot tubs.
  • Unplug sensitive electrical equipment and appliances, such as televisions and computers.
  • Remove food from your refrigerator and leave the door open before evacuating, but only if there's enough time to do so.
  • Turn off all lights except for one exterior light, which will indicate to NB Power crews that power is on at the residence.
