Smart Meters and Safety
At NB Power, the well-being of our customers is paramount, and nothing is more important than safety. We know that some customers have questions about the safety of smart meters, and we are here to make sure you have the information you need.
Here are the facts:
Smart meters are safe
NB Power's smart meter supplier, Itron, has manufactured millions of smart meters that utilities across the continent have installed without safety issues.
NB Power's smart meters adhere to Industry Canada Safety Standards
Like all the existing meters used by NB Power, smart meters meet Industry Canada Safety Standards and comply with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Safety Standard 2735. UL is a globally recognized, standard-setting organization that uses extensive safety research to ensure product safety, including minimizing the risk of fire.
Smart meters are equipped with advanced safety features
Just like a car has warning lights to indicate issues with the engine, NB Power's smart meters have sensors that detect potential electrical system issues behind the meter (the meter base), which is customer owned equipment. When the meter recognizes an abnormality, it sends an alert to NB Power, prompting us to dispatch our certified line crew to investigate and address safety concerns proactively.
Trained technicians install smart meters
Like all work performed on or near energized equipment, any electricity meter must be installed with great care by trained professionals. Our trained meter installers carefully inspect the condition of your meter base, and if safety issues are found, they are addressed before installing the smart meter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do smart meters cause fires?
No, smart meters do not cause fires. However, problems can arise from the home’s wiring or connections in the electrical system behind the meter. This can happen regardless of the type of meter, but with old meters there was no way of knowing. As mentioned above, NB Power's new smart meters have an advanced safety feature that detects potential safety issues early.
What happens if the smart meter detects overheating?
It may be a potential safety concern if the meter detects an abnormal temperature. When this happens, the meter automatically sends an alert to NB Power, prompting us to dispatch a line crew to your home to inspect your meter connection. Please note that for this alert to be received, the smart meter must have communications functions turned on and be actively communicating with our systems.
How do I know if the smart meter communications functions are turned on?
When a smart meter is installed, the communication functions are usually activated within a few days. Once the meter connects to the NB Power secure network, it should be communicating, unless you have contacted NB Power and opted out. If the meter is connecting, you will be able to view consumption data on your online account.
What happens when the smart meter sends an alert to NB Power?
Our team will respond quickly and dispatch a crew to your location to investigate and assess the situation. Our team will work with you to help resolve the issue.
Why do I need an electrician if the smart meter detects an issue?
If a high-temperature alert is triggered, it could indicate a problem with the electrical connections within the meter base, which is the homeowner’s property. In such cases, we may advise you to contact a licensed electrician to inspect and repair any issues. Learn about meter and equipment ownership.
How can I protect my electronic equipment and appliances from power surges?
While the smart meter sensor detects and alerts NB Power of potential safety concerns, it is important to note that customers are responsible for protecting their electronic devices and appliances from power surges. We recommend using surge protection devices to safeguard your equipment from potential voltage fluctuations.
